Medical Laboratory Science
A BRIEF HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF THE DEPARTMENT OF MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENCE, PLATEAU STATE UNIVERSITY, BOKKOS.
The Medical Laboratory Science Program commenced in the University in year 2022, with a pioneer intake of One Hundred and Fourteen (114) students admitted through the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). As a five-year program administered by a Head of Department (HOD) appointed by the Vice Chancellor.
In February 2023 the program received the approval of National Universities Commission recommendations for professional programs.
The department started with four academic staff, having Bitty Williams Azachi (Lecturer), Professor Lohya Nimzing as pioneer Head of Department, Biringmiap Linus (Lecturer), and Dr Valentine (Lecturer). It is the culture of the University of Bokkos to rotate leadership of departments among qualified academic staff. Each of these individuals are worthy of commendation for their immense contributions towards the sustenance of this program.
It is worthy of note that this department will not have attained this success without the support of the professional staff and the laboratory scientists in Plateau State Specialist Hospital, Jos and, other standard laboratories in the state where our students are being trained. Again, it is of note that the department is credited among the best in teaching and training of Medical Laboratory Scientists in Africa. The graduates of the department are found in Academics, Diagnostics, Laboratory Management, Biomedical organizations etc. All these are tangible rewards of the collective efforts of the department.
It is my prayer that we continue to work hard toward repositioning the department to a greater height.
