PLASU Senate Sanctions New Convocation Date,

Approves Major Academic Expansion

The Senate of Plateau State University, PLASU, Bokkos, has approved a revised schedule for its forthcoming combined 8th and 9th convocation ceremony. The event has been moved from the original dates of 28-29 November 2025 and is now set for January 2026.

The decision was reached during the 97th Regular Senate meeting, which was chaired by the chairman of Senate, Professor Shedrack Gaya Best.

 

The Vice-Chancellor. Professor Best presented a request for the change, citing unforeseen circumstances, and the Senators unanimously agreed to the revised date after considering the reasons provided.

The 97th Regular Senate also approved the establishment of 19 new undergraduate programmes, slated to commence in the 2026/2027 academic session.

This followed a proposal by the University’s Director of Academic Planning, Professor Buba M. Wufem*.

 

 Professor Wufem explained that the initiative is a strategic response to the growing number of qualified applicants seeking admission to PLASU and aims to meet the diverse educational needs of Plateau State and Nigeria.

The newly approved degree programmes span five Faculties:

They are ;

 

1 – Faculty of Computing-

 -B.Sc. Computer Science

 -B.Sc. Information and Communication Technology,

-B.Sc. Cybersecurity, -B.Sc. Data Science .

 

2 – Faculty of Communication and Media Studies.

-B.Sc. Broadcasting, -B.Sc. Mass Communication.

-B.Sc. Digital and Strategic Communication.

-B.Sc. Journalism and Media Studies.

-B.Sc. Development Communication Studies .

 

3 – Faculty of Education.

-B.Sc. (Ed) Social Studies and Civic Education.

-B.Sc. (Ed) Early Childhood Education. -B.Sc. (Ed) Economics.

-B.Ed. Education Management.

-B.Ed. Guidance and Counselling.

 

4-Faculty of Environmental Sciences.

-B.Sc. Quantity Survey

 

5- Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences.

-B.Rad. Radiography. -DPT. Physiotherapy, -D.D. Optometry.

-B.Sc. Nutrition and Dietetics.

 

Professor Best informed the Senators that the university has begun discussions with the relevant regulatory bodies, including the National Universities Commission (NUC), which plans to conduct a resource verification visit shortly. The Senators unanimously gave the green light for the continuation of the establishment process for the new programmes.Professor Best provided an update on the ongoing admissions process including the planned matriculation ceremony in November 2025.

 

On Staff Recruitment,the meeting further noted the recent approval granted by the Visitor and Governor of Plateau state,Barrister Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, for the recruitment of staff for the newly formed College of Medicine and Health Sciences, Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Department of Statistics, and Department of Religion and Cultural Studies.

 

The University Registrar, Mr. Yakubu Ayuba, announced,that plans are underway to advertise these positions in national newspapers, encouraging qualified candidates to apply.
