The Senate of Plateau State University (PLASU) in Bokkos has approved the management’s initiative to strengthen collaboration with security agencies to ensure uninterrupted academic activities, following school shutdowns across the nation due to safety concerns.
In a Special meeting held on December 1st, Vice Chancellor Professor Shedrack Best outlined the university’s proactive measures to safeguard staff and students in response to recent threats against educational institutions in Nigeria, which have led to temporary closures.
“Our university will not be intimidated by those seeking to disrupt the educational system,” Professor Best stated. He also conveyed the assurances of the Visitor to the University, the Governor of Plateau State, for full support to PLASU for the sustenance of the academic calendar.
To enhance campus security, the university has introduced alarm systems and other measures to monitor activities related to potential terrorism and crime. “We are committed to working closely with security agencies to ensure the safety of our community,” he added.
The Senate unanimously supported the proposed security enhancements in light of rising incidents of kidnapping and terrorism leading to school closures in various regions.
Additionally, the Vice Chancellor addressed the increasing demand for female student accommodation, stating that the ongoing hostel project, initially designated for male students, would be repurposed to assist in alleviating the housing deficit for female students by January, 2026
During the meeting, Director of ICT Mr. Sati Satmer Dapel highlighted improvements in internet connectivity, reflecting the institution’s growth under Professor Best’s leadership. “We aim to complete this project by January, and we will require all users to log in with their details for monitoring and security purposes,” he stated.
The Senate has set Wednesday, December 3rd, for students’ orientation, with the matriculation ceremony scheduled for the following day, Thursday, December 4th
