Introduction to science education
Science Education Department
The Science Education programme at Plateau State University (PLASU), Bokkos, was officially introduced in the 2023/2024 academic session with the aim of producing competent and well-trained science educators. The programme began with four core disciplines: B.Sc.(Ed) Mathematics, B.Sc.(Ed) Biology, B.Sc.(Ed) Chemistry, and B.Sc.(Ed) Physics. It commenced with a modest number of three academic staff and eighteen pioneering students, laying the groundwork for what has become a rapidly growing academic unit.
These initial programmes were designed to meet the increasing demand for quality science teachers in Nigeria. The curriculum was structured to integrate both theoretical knowledge and practical teaching skills, aligning with national educational standards. Despite the limited size in its first year, the small cohort allowed for individualized instruction and close academic mentorship, which contributed positively to the students’ development.
By the 2024/2025 academic session, the Science Education programme experienced remarkable growth. student enrollment rose significantly from eighteen to sixty-three, indicating a more than 300% increase within a year. This growth reflects the rising interest in science education and increased confidence in the university’s ability to deliver quality teacher education.
Several factors contributed to this expansion, including enhanced awareness of the programme, institutional support, improved learning facilities, and the dedication of the academic staff. The programme’s success also aligns with Nigeria’s broader educational focus on science and technology for national development.
Looking ahead, the department remains committed to producing highly skilled science educators capable of transforming teaching and learning in senior secondary schools across the country.
