The Butura community, host to Plateau State University (PLASU) in Bokkos, has reiterated its strong and unwavering support for the institution. In a renewed demonstration of partnership, Engineer John Mallo Makwal, the District Head of Butura and Chairman of the Butura Joint Traditional Council, led key community stakeholders on a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor in his office to express the community’s commitment.
During the visit, the monarch emphasized the delegation’s aim to connect with the mission and progress of the University. He commended Vice-Chancellor Professor Shedrack Best for propelling PLASU to new heights through rapid growth and substantial achievements in both quality and scope. “We came to register our support to you,” he stated. “This is the first time we are doing this, and it reflects the remarkable development PLASU has achieved. We will do everything possible to ensure that the vision of our forebears, who donated the land free of charge, is realized.”
Engineer Makwal also introduced the PLASU Liaison Committee, formed to act as a communication bridge between the host community and the University. “Engage this committee, especially regarding plans to transform PLASU into an urban area, which will require consultations on land and development matters,” he advised.
In response, Vice-Chancellor Professor Shedrack Best expressed appreciation for the visit, noting its significance. “Your visit means a lot to us and strengthens our management,” he remarked.
Professor Best reaffirmed his commitment to collaborating with stakeholders to advance the University’s mission. He described the formation of the Butura Liaison Committee as timely, particularly as the University expands its programs. “With the new programs recently approved by the NUC, our current land area will not suffice. We will work with the committee to ensure mutual understanding,” he assured. The Vice-Chancellor also announced that the University, through its Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, will soon initiate dairy production and expand its poultry farm to enhance supply and serve as a practical training center. Additionally, he revealed that PLASU has obtained a license from the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission to establish a campus radio station, which will feature broadcasts in the Butura language and play local songs as part of its corporate social responsibility.
Former Minister of Aviation during the Shehu Shagari administration, Chief Dah Samuel Mafuyei, former Member of the House of Representatives Hon. James Ayuba, and National President of the Butura Development Association, Dr. Ezekiel Macham, all encouraged the sons and daughters of Butura to continue supporting Plateau State University, Bokkos.
