Newly appointed Vice Chancellor of Plateau State University (PLASU), Professor Shedrack Gaya Best, on Monday (July 28, 2025) made his first official appearance since his appointment on July 24th, 2025. In an enthusiastic welcome led by the Students Union Government (SUG) President, Comrade Donald Yaksuk Doedel, Professor Best outlined his vision for the university, including the establishment of one of Nigeria’s first faculties of Mass Communication.

During the event, Professor Best announced exciting developments for the Department of Mass Communications, which will soon transition into a full faculty, complete with updated academic programs once the new building is completed. This upgrade reflects PLASU’s commitment to providing high-quality education and responding to the evolving needs of students.
“In October 2025, we will launch programs in Medicine and Pharmaceutical Sciences, and contracts will soon be awarded for the construction of their respective buildings,” said Professor Best. He also highlighted the introduction of Statistics, Religious and Cultural Studies, and plans to expand existing programs within the Faculty of Arts.
With a clear focus on improving campus life, Professor Best expressed his commitment to enhancing facilities for students. “We are hoping to build more hostels and implement additional amenities to ensure a conducive learning environment. By the next academic session, students will benefit from 24-hour internet services on campus,” he noted.

Expressing gratitude for the warm reception, Professor Best acknowledged the relatively peaceful atmosphere at PLASU since he assumed acting duties earlier. He promised to provide essential social amenities, including access to medical services through the employment of doctors and nurses, which were previously lacking.
Addressing the concerns surrounding the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NEL Fund), Prof. Best clarified that eligibility is limited to current students. “ICPC has advised us to refrain from disbursing funds to graduates,” he clarified, ensuring students that the university remains attentive to their financial needs.
In their welcome addresses, both SUG President Donald Yaksut Doedel and Rt. Hon. David Itse, President of the National Association of Plateau State Students (NAPSS), commended Professor Best’s dynamic approach and pledged the support of the student body in fostering a positive university environment.
Plateau State University looks forward to the leadership of Professor Shedrack Gaya Best as it strides toward becoming one of the leading institutions of higher education in Nigeria.
