The Vice Chancellor Plateau state university Bokkos, Professor Matur Malau Bernard says he feels delighted over the remarkable achievement of Professor John Barnabas Nvau for breaking new grounds with his pioneering research work using local herbs to formulate quality drugs and for being the first to present an Inaugural Lecture, in line with the mission and vision of the university, which is encapsulated in teaching, research and community service.
He stated this during the Inaugural Lecture which held at the Senate Chamber of the university.
Professor Matur also expressed delight, noting that such a milestone achievement is happening during his tenure as the fifth substantive Vice Chancellor and promised to create an enabling environment for research culture to thrive and be entrenched in the University.
John Barnabas Nvau, a Professor of Chemistry, is the current Director of Academic Planning of the University.
Delivering the lecture on the topic; ‘FROM FLORA TO FORMULA; A JOURNEY TO NATURAL PRODUCT CHEMISTRY’, Professor John Barnabas Nvau stated that he was moved to embark on the research work because of the gaps and shortcomings of the traditional method of harnessing plants for human use which saw him producing ‘BOKKOSCINE’ which according to him was named after his local government, Bokkos.
According to Professor Nvau, the product is for the cure of diseases such as wounds related to diabetes and cancer saying the drug has reached clinical trials which is the final stage that will lead to the drug being released into the market.
This first public lecture in the history of Plateau State University, Bokkos since brought together two former Vice Chancellors of Plateau State University Bokkos, Professor John Wokton Wade and Doknan Decent Danjuma Sheni and Professor Hayward Babale Mafuyai former Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos in addition to academicians from various Universities, Traditional Rulers as well as Religious Leaders.
The pioneer Vice Chancellor, Plateau State University Bokkos, Professor John Wokton Wade while commending the researcher, noted that an inaugural lecture is one of the rituals in the university system which desire is for the mentorship of upcoming academics and also to inspire younger ones towards finding solution to human problems.
While congratulating the University Community, Professor Wade appealed for the sustenance of the culture which should to other fields of learning.
Also, former Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Doknan Danjuma Sheni expressed joy over the rapid growth of the University in terms of infrastructural development and urged the stakeholders of the institution to put more effort in the area of training and retraining of Staff so as to have more Ph.D holders in the University.
On his part, Former Vice Chancellor University of Jos, Professor Hayward. Babale Mafuyai thanked successive governments and the current one led by Barrister Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang for their effort in the building of PLASU and solicits for more funding of the only University in the state.
High point of event was the presentation of a plaque to the guest lecturer, Professor John Barnabas Nvau for his pioneering research work and presentation.
